Geometry Week 9

Class was so fun today. Everyone is feeling comfortable to talk, ask questions, and work together. The students worked ahead on their work. I did examples from their homework, but they didn’t want to stop. They kept working on the other homework problems. That tells me that they want to get it done, and understand the concept. We did 2 constructions and they didn’t need me to explain it to them. They just did it. I supervised to see that they were doing it correctly. We copied a triangle and then did the SSS construction. These were very similar to each other

We started a new unit, Unit 4, today much of the time was spend on the basic grammar (terms) of triangles. Then we started the basic proofs for triangles. These proofs will be more straightforward than previous chapters.

Today I handed out a tri-fold page for the notes sheet on 4.1. They filled it out as we went. This kept this sections notes confined to one page.

Below are the videos for today's class. Here are all the videos for Unit 4.

Geometry Week 8

Ten weeks ago, I started a Geometry class in my home. I teach my daughter and 4 other students. I have been posting my class videos on the Geometry page. This morning I decided that I have not posted on my blog in a very long time. I will be putting the recaps of each class here as a post and include the video also. Here is  yesterday's class overview.

Class went well, but we missed ??? today. I hope he is well. I got a consensus today that “Proofs Are Hard”. They are a new way of thinking for most. Today I walked them through the planning stage. We discussed methods to start making a plan. Here is what we talked about:
1. Mark your diagram with what you know.
2. Find relationships with the given and what is in the diagram. They noticed that we often use…
  •  Vertical angles
  •  Transitive
  • Corresponding angles

If I could give some advice for proofs, make sure they are going over the postulates and theorems each day. They should read them each day. The first day of a unit when I give the term sheet out, they should write them in their postulate books. You can’t use the reasons if you don’t know what they are. Then each day when they do their homework they should read over them again. Repetition is the way our brains remember.

There is more algebra in the second section today. We have been talking about parallel and perpendicular lines, so we are relating this to the graphs of them.

There will be a test this week. There will be 2 proofs on the test. They are the exact proofs that are on the review. I encouraged them to work hard to do the proofs and struggle with them before they looked at the answers. God brings good out or our struggles, there are lessons in our struggles!

I am so proud of the hard work that everyone is putting into Geometry.  Here is what we covered in class yesterday.
