Roman Arch

We have been learning about the Roman Empire. Today we experimented with straight bridges and arches for science class check it out.

Cold and Hot

For science Tessa did an experiment where she had ice cold water in one bucket, lukewarm in the middle,and hot in the on the other end. She she put her hands in the hot and cold water. One hand in each for 30 seconds. She couldn't help but squeal because the ice cold water was very cold. She felt like she was getting hypothermia on that hand. Then she moved both hands to the lukewarm water in the middle. She noticed that the hand that was in the cold water felt warm and the hand that had been in the hot water felt cold. This helped her to understand how our brain senses temperature.

Teflon Science

For science Kit and Miss Ripstick wrote secret messages on Teflon plumbers tape. Teflon is a polymer. We watched some videos on how plumbers use it and found my Teflon pan to see another use for it.

Gummie Bear Science

We continued with polymers for science. The girls had to see how water & salt water effected a gummy bear (a polymer). They learned what a control was, how to measure and patience, they had to make observations the next day. They had fun.

Magic Fish

 

I wanted a more hands on science so when we were at the last home school convention I let Kit pick a science kit to do. I wanted her to be able to choose the topic so that she will like it. She choose polymers from the Academy of Science for Kids. We do each of the 12 units on Fridays and Kit has invited her friend Miss Ripstick. This week they were doing Figure Out These Funny Fish. They had to make a hypothesis and then test it. I like the scientific process that they are learning. Their first hypothesis was incorrect and they had to devise another one. That was very beneficial for them also. They don't need to be correct the first time.
